OPENING SCRIPTURE I Corinthians 12:4-7, 11 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Mighty and merciful God, you have called us to be your people and claimed us for the service of Jesus Christ. We confess that we have not lived up to our calling. We have been timid and frightened disciples, forgetful of your powerful presence and the strength of your Spirit among us. (moment of silent prayer) O God, forgive our foolish and sinful ways. As you have chosen us and claimed us in our baptism, strengthen us anew to choose Christ’s way in this world. Give us your Holy Spirit that each one may be provided with all the gifts of grace needed to fulfill our common calling; through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Amen

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Lord, in so many ways you have sent us the message of your salvation, yet we have been too busy to hear. In so many ways, even through the Christ, you have tried to show us your love, but we would not see. So often you would have us share your love with others that you might bless the world through us, but we would not share it. (moment of silent prayer) Forgive us Lord. PRAYER OF CONFESSION We bring our prayers to you, Gracious God, sensing that there is more to life than the ways we have known. We are drawn to the Messiah, yet we shrink from following where faith leads. We are afraid of what we might lose if we are guided by the Spirit. Thoughts of sacrifice and servanthood are not appealing to us. We are reluctant to enter into a close relationship with you. We think we know better than you what is best for us.
